  President's Message

Welcome to October! I love October! College football is in full swing. My daughter Abby has a month of 3rd grade under her belt and we have finally developed a system for before and after school. I also love fall colors (especially when traveling up north). September was a whirlwind of a month. MDEW was a blast! I love any opportunity I get to network with my IAAP friends and I really get excited seeing members get energized and motivated. We have a great team of chapter leaders and it showed at MDEW. Thank you to all who took a beautiful Michigan Saturday to grow with us. September was also the beginning of the meeting season for most chapters. Looking at the programs being offered throughout the division this year, it's going to be a great year to learn new things.

October is the month that many chapters hold their membership recruitment events. What a great time to invite a friend, relative, and/or co-worker to attend a chapter meeting. Or maybe just meeting for lunch to share how you have benefit from membership in IAAP.

Don't forget this Friday is Bosses day. Be sure to reach out to your boss and let them know that you appreciate them (especially if they support your IAAP membership). Just as we hope to be recognized during Administrative Professionals Week in April, we should, in turn, recognize our bosses for the work that they do.

Best wishes for everyone who will be taking the certification exam on November 6 and 7. I admire your motivation to excel in your profession and the hard work it takes to earn the CPS and CAP. Just taking the exam is a wonderful achievement. I look forward to hearing great news in December when the results are announced.

Have a great month and stay warm!

Best Wishes! - Heather

Michigan Division Updates

Michigan Division 2009-2010 Awards

The Michigan Division awards for 2009-2010 are now posted on the Members Only page of our website. For more information, click here.

Michigan Division Annual Meeting 2010
Keep watching the Michigan Division website for more information regarding MDAM 2010 at the Doubletree Hotel in Bay City on May 21 and 22, 2010.  Housing information is now available on the MDAM page.  Be sure to mark your calendars now and join us.  Our special guest will be our International President, Susan Shamali CPS/CAP.

Michigan Division Education Workshop
The Michigan Division Education Workshop was held on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the Valley Plaza Resort.  Over 70 members of the Michigan Division (and one friend from the Ohio Division) were in attendance. A highlight of MDEW was the tremendous response to our request of donated food items for Hidden Harvest. We were able to donate over 400 pounds of food for those in need. More information on MDEW is located here. It's also never too early to plan to attend MDEW 2010 on September 18, 2010 at the Inn at St. Johns in Plymouth.

Pathways to Excellence

The Pathways to Excellence program is going strong.

Now's a great time to start on your road to excellence.  Below are some things that you as a member can be doing now to achieve this rating:

Sign your Member of Excellence Commitment Agreement for 2009. To download the form, click
here.

Participate in the Web Community.

Ask questions in the e-groups, write a blog, start an e-group of your own.

Pay your membership dues on time (or early)

Invite a co-worker or friend to become a member of IAAP.

Get involved in a leadership role in your Chapter/Division or International.

Your chapter leaders can also be working now to becoming chapters of excellence.  Some things that should be already accomplished (and/or should be done soon) include:

Your chapter president should sign your chapter's commitment agreement for 2009.

Conduct an Audit for 2008/2009 Financials. Be sure to send your audit statement to the Division treasurer ASAP.

Hosting a membership drive during the IAAP year.

Participating in the Member of Excellence program can be rewarding on the division level as all members who submit their MoE application to headquarters (and let the MD President-Elect know) prior to April 31 will be entered into a drawing at MDAM.

The Gift of Membership

Do you have a special co-worker or friend who is also an administrative professional? If you’d like to do something special for him or her we have the perfect idea: the Gift of Membership. It’s a great way to introduce your friends and co-workers to IAAP. Maybe it’s a way to help that admin that just got laid off, or as a special gift for your son or daughter who is now a part of the profession.

It’s easy to give the Gift of Membership. You can either mail/fax in the Gift of Membership form or call Headquarters with your information, including payment, and the name and contact information of the recipient. After the membership department gets the information, they will send out an e-mail informing the recipient of his or her Gift of Membership. It only takes a few minutes but gives a gift that lasts an entire year.

You can access the sign-up forms here: http://www.iaap-hq.org/join/gift.html
